Royal Military College of St-Jean
The Royal Military College of Saint-Jean is much more than just a school. It is a place steeped in history, where young minds prepare to serve their country with honor. Founded in 1952, it had a very specific mission: to give French-speaking Canadians a stronger presence among the officers of the Canadian Armed Forces. It was the first bilingual military college in the country, a true symbol of unity.
At first, officer cadets could only complete the first two years of their training there. To finish their studies, they had to go to Kingston or Victoria. But over time, the college expanded, gaining the right to offer university degrees. By 1985, it had become an independent institution with its own programs and diplomas. Then, in 1995, everything changed. The government shut down the college, and its legacy was transferred to the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston.
But the story of RMC Saint-Jean did not end there. In 2007, its reopening was announced, and in 2008, it once again welcomed officer cadets. Although it did not yet have official status as a college or university at that time, it continued to play a vital role in military education. In 2018, it regained its university status, offering a program in International Studies. Today, it even welcomes foreign students from military academies around the world.
RMC Saint-Jean is also a unique historical site. Fort Saint-Jean, built in 1743, witnessed great battles and sieges that shaped the country’s history. Today, in addition to being a military education center, the site is open to the public. It houses a museum, a swimming pool, an ice rink, and sports fields.
