History of Greenwood

Greenwood started as a small hamlet just south of the Dominion Atlantic Railway’s Kingston Station. Everything changed in 1942 when the Royal Air Force set up RAFCFB-Greenwood Station Greenwood, turning nearby farmland into an airfield for training aircrew under the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. By 1944, the Royal Canadian Air Force took over, renaming it RCAF Station Greenwood. The base continued to evolve, and in 1968, with the unification of the Canadian Forces, it officially became CFB Greenwood. Almost three decades later, in 1997, it was designated as 14 Wing Greenwood, making it one of Canada’s eleven operational wings.

Over the years, Greenwood grew alongside its military presence. Between the 1970s and early 2000s, the village saw a steady rise in population as other air force bases in eastern Canada shut down, leading to the consolidation of aircraft and personnel at CFB Greenwood. This shift brought more families to the area, creating a strong military community that remains central to the village’s identity.

Most of Greenwood’s housing is tied to the base, with military families living in what are known as PMQs, or Private Married Quarters. The heart of the village is home to these military residences, while non-military housing is mainly found on the outskirts. Greenwood may have started as a quiet hamlet, but today, it thrives as a key part of Canada’s Air Force operations and a close-knit community for those who serve.
