Living Near CFB Halifax – What Military Families Should Know

I work with Canadian Armed Forces members and military families relocating to CFB Halifax and surrounding communities, helping them choose the right home, neighborhood, and strategy for their posting.

Being posted to CFB Halifax means more than just a move — it’s choosing the right community, commute, schools, and lifestyle for your family. Here’s what CAF members need to know when relocating to the area.

Health Services
Shopping & Dining

Medical Care

Military personnel and families can access CFB health services as well as local hospitals and clinics, ensuring comprehensive healthcare and emergency services close to home.

Halifax is experiencing a significant shortage of family doctors, with tens of thousands of people on the Need a Family Practice Registry waiting for a primary care provider. While there are walk-in clinics (e.g., Family Focus Medical Clinics, Clayton Park Medical Clinic), they are often in high demand and filling up quickly.

Shopping & Dining

Halifax offers a diverse mix of shopping and dining, ranging from downtown boutiques and scenic waterfront dining at Queen’s Marque to major shopping centers like Halifax Shopping Centre and Dartmouth Crossing. Highlights include fresh local seafood, the iconic Halifax Donair, and upscale restaurants such as The Bicycle Thief.

Major malls such as the Halifax Shopping Centre, with over 130 stores including Aritzia, Apple, and Sephora, and Mic Mac Mall in nearby Dartmouth, provide a full-service retail experience

House
School & Education

Housing

Military personnel in Halifax have access to on-base residential housing managed by the Canadian Forces Housing Authority (CFHA), along with designated “base accommodations” (commonly known as “shacks” or junior ranks barracks). As of March 2026, the federal government is significantly expanding this portfolio, with 400 new apartment units planned for CFB Halifax to combat acute housing shortages

Schools & Education

Halifax offers a mix of public and private schools, along with post-secondary institutions like Dalhousie University and Saint Mary’s University. Families have access to strong educational programs for children of all ages. There are several private and independent schools in Halifax, Nova Scotia, offering various curricula from pre-primary to grade 12. Top options include the Halifax Grammar School, Armbrae Academy, Halifax Christian Academy, and Bedford Academy, with annual tuition ranging from roughly $12,850 to $33,000.
Transportation
Lifestyle & Recreation

Transportation & Support

Halifax has reliable public transit, ferry services, and well-maintained roads. Base personnel also have access to shuttle services and other military transport support to make commuting easier. Halifax offers a comprehensive network of public transportation to connect residents across the city and surrounding areas. A large fleet of over 350 buses services more than 75 routes, covering both the urban core and suburban communities. For regional connections, MetroX express buses link outlying areas such as Tantallon and Porters Lake to downtown Halifax. The MetroLink Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, including routes like the 320 Airport/Falliveer, provides express service with limited stops between key terminals. Within the urban core, Urban Express routes offer limited-stop service designed for faster commuting. Additionally, Harbour Ferries operate two routes connecting downtown Halifax with Dartmouth, providing a scenic and convenient water route for daily commuters.

Lifestyle & Recreation

The Halifax area offers a vibrant mix of coastal living, rich history, and outdoor recreation, balancing urban amenities with quick access to nature. The Halifax Waterfront Boardwalk, stretching 4 km along the harbour, is a central hub for walking, dining, and scenic views, including ferry access to Dartmouth. Parks such as Point Pleasant Park, along with the Chain of Lakes Trail and Susies Lake Loop, provide popular hiking and biking routes, while numerous beaches—including Chocolate Lake Beach, Lawrencetown Beach, and Crystal Crescent Beach Provincial Park—offer swimming and surfing opportunities. Water activities like kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding are available along the coast, and winter recreation is supported by the Emera Oval, which hosts skating, roller skating, and biking, with nearby ski and snowshoe options.
